If you look around the internet and in various book stores there are literally hundreds of diets that claim to be the ultimate solution for losing body fat.
They all work on the basic principle of weight loss which is simply a matter of eating less calories than you are eating now.
The Atkins, South Beach Diet, The Zone, Cabbage Soup etc…All of these diets are attempts at teaching people to vary the type of food they eat in order to eat less calories per day.
For many people these so called “fat burning diets” have worked really well but for many of us (me included) they are either just to hard to maintain or they make us miserable and therefore we never see results.
Personally I have used the healthy bodybuilding diet approach whereby I was eating 5-6 meals a day, restricting carbs, avoiding processed foods, lots of vegetables and protein etc
Now there is nothing wrong with this method and I used it for many years with great results so therefore I was recommending it to all my clients and friends.
However I was seeing that for some people this just wasn’t practical and they were struggling to organise themselves and stick with it during the course of their daily lives. Also I was finding as I got older with less time and a more relaxed attitude to food and exercise ie I wasn’t as obsessed my results where not as impressive.
So basically I needed for myself and my clients a new way of losing fat that would solve these issues:
I can still have the food I like on a regular basis.
I don’t have to count calories
Is easy to follow
Takes a healthy approach ie I can eat a balanced diet without having to completely cut out certain food groups
Can fit into a normal person daily schedule (ie round work, kids etc)
This is when I came across the the approach of “intermittent fasting” found in the diet program Eat Stop Eat. This method states that a couple of times a week you should do a mini fast ie skip breakfast and lunch to help reduce your total weekly intake of calories.
Here is the creator Brad Pilon explaining what exactly is intermittent fasting
At first I was skeptical because I was brought up to believe that fasting would result in a loss of muscle mass and therefore a slower metabolism.
However, Brad Pilon shows research data that shows that this is not the case and short term fasting can actually increase fat burning enzymes basically sinking the whole 6 meal a day mantra to fat loss (Personally I still think this approach is credible but it is good to hear there is alternative).
What I liked about this specific eating strategy is that you can still pizza, pasta, burgers or whatever you enjoy within reason and get ultra lean.
Also by just following the simple formula of 2 fast days and eating normally the rest of the time it felt like a plan that I could fit into my life without too much hassle.
I’ve been following this diet a couple of months now and as I said it is easy to follow in that once or twice per week I skip breakfast and lunch and don’t eat until dinner.
Results so far are very positive, I am almost down to my target of 8% body fat while still having the odd beer and treat meal such as pizza. I am not gorging on fast food because I don’t want to but I’m able to enjoy foods I want on a regular basis without getting stressed about it.
In conclusion if your tired of the normal approach to fat burning diets or are just not seeing the results you want then this might just be the plan for you.

Slow down sparky.. Dieting has been a life long struggle for me. I find there is no quick and easy solution to this. I have tried many different things and diet and exercise seem to work the best. Although, I have found a few supplements and programs that seem to work better than others or at least aid in this never ending endeavor, it is a lifestyle more than anything.
Hi
I think dieting is a struggle for most people, it certainly has been for myself. I agree that a diet and regular exercise are the key to long lasting weight loss but the diet especially has to be sustainable. This is why fasting intermittently as shown in eat stop has worked for me because it is now a lifestlye so i don´t have to think about food too much unless I want to get super lean for holidays etc. I have worked with many people trying to lose weight and the ones that are successful are those who find a balance that works for them. Everybody needs to stop and think before they embark on any new diet and really analyse will this actually work for me and can I commit to it for the long term.
Thanks for your comment
